Success stories are all the more pertinent when companies have had to overcome challenges.

For Auckland-based plastic food-packaging manufacturer Bonson, a series of unforeseen circumstances conspired against the company during its recent multi-million dollar construction programme.

The new 6000m² purpose-built facility in New Lynn was required so Bonson could maintain its business growth through increasing exports 60% of the company's sales are to Australian clients. The project, funded by Westpac and designed by Woodhams Meikle Zhan Architects, brings together staff and facilities from four separate locations. It was designed to meet high standards in environmental sustainability and food hygiene.

Westpac senior business manager Mike Hirst says Westpac was involved right from the outset.

"The project highlighted the importance of a close and trusted relationship between the client and financier," he says. "We kept abreast of developments during the protracted and problematic building programme. There were difficulties with ground conditions; the weather had a serious negative impact on the project; and other unforeseen circumstances arising from the amalgamation of the city councils led to delays and increased costs.

"We worked with Bonson to ensure the company had sufficient budget to complete the building without compromising on either the scope of the project or the quality of finish."

Bonson managing director David Tsui says Westpac's close involvement was crucial to the success of the project.

"Westpac attended all the site meetings and was very proactive in accommodating the changes and increases in budget. The team kept us informed of options to explore in light of the required changes, and provided plenty of support. And we were particularly grateful that Westpac was adamant there should be no compromise in terms of quality."

Taking such a hands-on approach is a key focus for Westpac, which has many ideas to help grow a business from financing property development, investment property or business equipment, to helping companies make the transition from renting to owning their own business premises.
