Good lighting is essential in the kitchen, both to illuminate work surfaces and to provide the right ambience for a room that is frequently part of a living area.

Philips has a range of energy-efficient halogen sys-tems that achieve these aims while also saving power.

These systems include Star and Tilta downlights. When combined with the Masterline ES (Energy Saving) halogen lamp, these lights offer increased light output for the same energy consumption as a regular halogen.

Philips says the Masterline ES lamp works best with a soft start transformer, such as the Philips ETS. This means the lamp doesn't need a rush of power to achieve optimum glow: it simply increases currents gradually.

This significantly increases the life of the bulb up to 5000 hours as compared to 1000 hours for a standard halogen.

The lamp also has an infra-red, heat-reflecting coating and a double-ended inner lamp burner, which together make it up to 40% more efficient than a regular halogen.
