Sydney Harbour is recognised the world over for its iconic waterfront architecture, which made the design of a new wharf all the more critical. When Group GSA was commissioned to design the Milson Street Wharf in North Sydney, the brief required a distinctive building that would also become widely recognised.

Rheinzink titanium and zinc pre-weathered Elite roofing from Craft Metals was specified to enhance the curved profile of the structure, which has a clean, modern aesthetic that does not overpower the natural beauty of the harbour.

The materials and colours merge the architecture with the surrounding sandstone, and work with the strong light and the harsh environment of the foreshore. The curved roof also provides a sense of drama, yet its shape still allows expansive views to the sky and water.

Stephen Pearse, Group GSA design architect, says the visual softness and longevity of zinc, and the fact that it is maintenance-free were key aspects when considering the choice of material for such an aggressive environment.

Rheinzink pre-weathered Elite will ensure the roof has a long maintenance-free life without losing any of the aesthetic attributes of the design.

The tones of the Rheinzink titanium pre-weathered and Graphite Grey ranges are the result of the zinc alloy manufacturing process, and not just a surface coating. The Rheinzink range meets or exceeds environmental requirements under ISO 14025 and ISO 21930 and Life Cycle assessments (LCA) have been made according to ISO 14040.
