How to double the size of a rundown Mid-century Modern home while retaining the original building’s distinctive structure and character

Architect James Choate’s renovation and addition of a rundown 1950s Mid-century Modern home retains as much of the original building and its character as possible – all while doubling the size. The interior of the existing brick-clad building, seen on the left, was stripped out to create a large, open-plan family living, dining and kitchen area. Bedrooms and bathrooms were moved to a new structure, set back from the original. The only physical connection between the old and new is a glazed bridge sitting lightly on the original home’s roof.
