TIDA International Kitchen of the Year

TIDA New Zealand Kitchen of the Year

Studio2 Architects, Auckland

Everything about this kitchen in a multi-generational, family retreat puts it firmly at the centre of activity. The gabled architecture of the space is designed to make the most of views in two directions, while also providing as much privacy as possible from neighbours.

Judges' comment:

The proportions in this kitchen were very well attended to, and the long island is a great centrepiece in the space.

Inspired details include the clever leg supports for the countertop and the playful custom designed circular hardware on the tall cabinets.

The lighting plan is spare but effective, including the feature fixtures over the island.

Judges' comments:

There are hidden gems in this kitchen, including the tall window that overlooks the back hall and staircase. This detail allows the teak structure to float in the space. T

he kitchen’s asymmetry is cleverly designed and the teakwood element on the back panel of the sculptural island ties-in nicely.

The proportions here really make the design – nothing is formulaic.
