This house is designed for a couple who love the outdoors, enjoy entertaining theirfriends and family, and care deeply about the environment. Upending the usual suburban house layout, the design presents a narrow façade to the street, leaving a void that reveals the depth of the block. The clients had wanted a house that exudes pure space and natural light and in response the design’s generous use of glass and volume creates a luminous environment intimately related to the outdoors. The largest room is the outside yard where most of the dining and socializing occurs, no matter the time of day or season. Essentially, the yard forms the house, rather than the other way around. Offering a welcome relief from the virtually solid wall formed by adjacent houses, this design presents a welcoming, community-oriented face to the street.
