8 exotic islands to set you dreaming

Your kitchen island doesn't have to just be  a freestanding work surface with cabinetry – these examples take island design that bit further, and we think the results are outstanding

The raised section of this island can be used by guests as a bar, plus it provides additional storage for the open living area to the right.

Islands don't have to be weighed down with sinks and cabinetry. Here the 'island' consists of slender legs with artistic benchtop, perfectly combining the functions of table and uncluttered worksurface.

5. Sculpture from above

Eolo

We're not sure if this wild ventilation feature qualifies as 'island' but it certainly informs the look as well as clearing the air.

Another departure for this table-like island is the free-standing nature of the induction hob on the right. (Most of this kitchen is hidden in the walls behind.)
