How to double the size of a rundown Mid-century Modern home while retaining the original building’s distinctive structure and character

​​​​​​​The original kitchen in this 1950s home was a cramped, enclosed galley arrangement, completely unsuited to the new owners and their family. In the new plan, the kitchen was expanded out into space previously allocated to a bedroom, while bedrooms were moved to an addition set back from the existing building.
