Exposed structural elements and services help to keep the interior of the North Beach Branch Library in San Francisco light and airy. Similarly, central skylights and clerestory windows maximise the natural light, minimising the need for artificial lighting. A highly efficient mechanical HVAC system is employed to supply fresh air to the reading rooms. The building, which is scheduled to achieve LEED Gold Certification, also has photovoltaic solar panels on the roof, and recycled cotton batt thermal and acoustical insulation.
