Cool stone slabs balance warm timber veneer cabinetry with intricate detailing in this serene centrepiece kitchen with generous scullery backup

Designed by Urbane Projects

From the designer:

Homeowners' brief

A part of our interior design brief, the homeowners, being avid entertainers, wanted their kitchen to provide generous storage.

In addition, they requested a kitchen larder scullery with second dishwasher and a computer nook.

The kitchen acts as the centrepiece – connecting the alfresco and living areas to form an extended entertainment hub.

And emphasis was made on maximising the views of the Swan River with iconic cliffs of Black Wall Reach region, ensuring these outlooks were captured from this fantastic entertaining zone.

Design Response

Our designers’ impression of our homeowners’ vision: “an iconic home, modern with a Mid-century flavour”.

A corner block design outlined by a rich verge landscape opens up to a Mid-century modern kitchen and living area of contrasting materiality and graphic shapes.

A split-level living area allow uninterrupted river views from the kitchen and creates a mid-century sunken living room look.

The selection of materials was carefully crafted to highlight the contrast between natural and man-made, brutalist and warm, robust, and delicate.

Beautiful natural stone slabs were selected, guiding the kitchen’s design around the slab sizing to optimise the use of the material.

The use of timber veneer and intricate detailing to the framework cabinetry adds soft tones to the overall kitchen design and create a serene visual experience.

The island bench was designed to be a 'piece of furniture' within the space, as opposed to a typical kitchen island.

The island is built on legs, allowing it to open up the space and creating a larger feel of space.

Seamless integration of appliances includes integrated Sub-Zero fridge with custom made timber cabinetry handles.

A pop-down tv, built into overhead cabinets, is also included in the custom cabinetry.

The overall proportion of the kitchen was designed to reflect the substantiality of the exterior architecture with linear structural symmetry and contrasting textures.

The owners, being avid collectors, wanted noticeable spaces available for artworks which led to integrating a gallery feel to the kitchen and living areas design, scaled to a residential level.
