Party at the back! This inside-to-out home is a dream for entertaining

Opening up at the back to connect with an existing pool area, this home's open-plan interior has plenty of warm natural wood accents, the floors included

Designed by Craig Farrugia, Craig Farrugia Building Design

From the designer:

This project was a knock down and rebuild of the owners’ existing home.

Part of the brief was to tie the new home in with an existing pool and cabana area that the owners had recently completed.

A lot of the colours and finishes were taken from the cabana and used throughout the house to ensure a cohesive design.

The brief

The owners love to entertain, so having the kitchen, living and dining areas well connected to the alfresco and outdoor entertaining areas was a must.

Plus they wanted the home to be open-plan, light and bright, and with airy living spaces.

Four bedrooms plus media room, a home gym and a library area were required, while the master bedroom to be a private retreat with walk in robe & ensuite.

In addition, the fourth bedroom was to be a self-contained studio with separate access – enabling it to be used for in-law or carer accommodation.

Design rationale:

Thankfully the pool and rear yard faced north which allowed us to design the kitchen, dining and living spaces to spill out onto a covered alfresco which overlooks the pool and yard.

A café style servery window was incorporated to further connect the kitchen to the outdoors.

The orientation of the lounge room and master bedroom above was put on an angle to again take in the views of the pool as well as maximise the northerly aspect.

All the sleeping areas are located upstairs to give the owners and their children privacy when they have guests over.

The generous sized master bedroom, ensuite and walk-in robe were designed with luxury in mind to give the owners a sanctuary of their own.

The oversized childrens’ bedrooms – served by a large main bathroom – ensure that they each have their own space.

Upstairs also features the library area complete with north-facing window seat overlooking the yard and pool area, perfect for relaxing in the winter sun.

The self-contained studio was also incorporated upstairs with a separate entrance which serves as in-law/carer accommodation and can provide the children with some additional privacy and independence into the future.

The end result, we think, is a beautiful family home with quality finishes and fixtures throughout which suits the owners’ needs perfectly now and into the future.
