The gentle waves of Lake Wanaka are evoked in the architecture of this lakeside home, with living spaces and kitchen upstairs to optimise the views

Designed by Priyanka Sareen, Home Factor

From the building designer:

Design rationale

The design rationale for this home was to emulate the gentle waves and stunning hues of Lake Wanaka.

We achieved this through our curved architectural design, colour palette, and use of natural materials from the alpine region.

The owners of the home are of Indian Heritage – their design requirement was bold, vibrant, and luxurious, with elements that remind them of their culture.

Exterior

The front exterior is designed as a gentle wave, flowing artistically from the front facade, wrapping the side of the home as a bespoke rainscreen.

The screen is crafted from cedar slats, varying in size and stain.

We also incorporated schist rock into the exterior – wrapping the garage door and flowing into the entryway.

The foyer is adorned with a uniquely curved door hardware in brushed brass and a wave-like timber seat.

Kitchen/entertainment

The kitchen is the heart of this home, designed for abundant entertainment.

An open-plan layout seamlessly connects it to the living room, and media room for a grand hosting experience.

A concealed pantry adds functionality, while copper and grey accents, combined with elevated cove lighting, infuse a touch of luxury into the scullery.

Heritage and culture are woven into the kitchen's design and colour scheme, while also reflecting the alpine region.

We incorporated a striking marble breakfast bar, adorned with gold, copper, and grey veins, into the kitchen design.

Matte grey, soft-touch cabinetry blends with the golden splashback.

This ultimate entertainment space is complete with access to an expansive balcony that wraps the full front facade, providing breathtaking lake views.

The extended roofline gives shade against a harsh sun glare, allowing for the perfect outdoor summer brunch.

Bedrooms

Each bedroom is designed as the perfect canvas for decorative interiors, while providing ample sunshine and airflow.

The master bedroom sits at the top floor of the home, complete with a spacious walk-in wardrobe, an architectural study nook, and access to the wide outdoor balcony for gorgeous vista views.

Bathrooms

In the master ensuite, we adorned the space with striking green amazonite gemstone-like tiles, featuring exquisite white and gold veins and opulent gold tapware.

These feature tiles are paired with dark grey tiles simulating a corten steel effect.

This combination subtly pays tribute to our owners' Indian heritage, while the green statement wall evokes Lake Wanaka's lush forests.

In the second ensuite, white and grey mosaic marble tiles are complemented by black nickel-plated tapware and dark grey tiles for a soothing and sophisticated ambiance.

The architectural main bathroom seamlessly combines abstract teal tiles and ash grey tiles to reflect Lake Wanaka's hues.

Nickel-toned tapware adds a refined touch, creating harmony throughout.

In the guest powder room, a stunning cream and gold feature tile arrangement resembles cascading leaves.

This bold statement wall is perfectly balanced with deep grey tiles.

A modern basin featuring a delicately curved sink, with contrasting sleek edges, blends perfectly with the statement tile and is elevated with luxury brushed brass tapware.

Each bathroom is elevated by ambient cove lighting and an LED mirror with a dimmable feature, creating various moods for the spaces.
