Context

Inspired by the south of New Zealand, and distinctive Cape Dutch architectural style, this home is timeless, solid and built with longevity in mind.

Response

Outside, bagged brick and Wanaka schist are an ideal match for the home’s exterior. Its living spaces are defined by the use of high gable ceilings, an apex in the main living area, and a courtyard area designed to be protected from the prevailing wind which allows for year-round outdoor living.

Contemporary and made for modern-day family living this home features fresh walls and concrete flooring that have been accented by warm caramel colourways and leathery textures for spaces that will always feel like home but won’t expire before the eye.

Areas were created and purpose-built to house treasured artefacts and wares collected by the owner over the years, adding an individual touch to each space.

Throughout the home, the use of natural and solid materials created honest and open spaces that accessorised the soft and warm white plastered walls. By using broad architraves and skirting an overall look of depth and definition was achieved.

Beginning with a fresh and organic base, each room was personalised through hints of colour and texture so they remained understated and practical, yet beautifully tailored.

Key points and considerations

Idea was for solid / timeless / longevity
Used gables to maximise interior size (and reduce footprint size) for loft above bedrooms and attic storage above garage. Kept high gable ceilings throughout kitchen/dining/living and master bedroom.
Exterior bagged brick and Wanaka schist with wide span metal roof – roof was quite visual from road
3 pavilions connected by flat roof in entry/laundry. Entry forms the courtyard - designed for outdoor living sheltered from westerly wind
