The most pressing design challenge in addressing the bathroom was determining its location in the reconfigured third storey space. 

By shifting the bathroom to the back corner, we were able to open up the floorplan for better flow and functionality. 

However, relocating the bathroom threw up its own design challenges, primarily limited natural light. 

We worked with the owner and architect to reconfigure the bathroom space, with two main objectives – to use smart design to invite as much light into the room as we could, and to make it as functional as possible in its new location. 

To optimise light in the bathroom and imbue a feeling of openness, we approached lighting holistically. 

Firstly, several well-positioned ambient downlights ensured the space was well lit. 

Next, LED strip lighting was installed around the mirrored cabinetry, above the shower, and under the vanity, providing ample lighting from all angles. 

The layering of light sources mimicked natural light, ensuring that daily tasks could be performed easily. 

The bathroom’s new location also gave us an opportunity to re-work its layout. 

The initial architectural drawings saw the toilet opposite the entry to the bathroom. 

We relocated the vanity to be the focal point, opposite the door, which also invited outside light into the space by bouncing off the mirrored cabinetry. 

 With the owner’s design vision in mind, we procured a palette of earthy warm tones. 

Honed stone tile, light oak cabinetry and brushed brass tapware kept the mood warm and inviting. 

These matte surfaces also served to bounce light around the space. 

The owner’s love of curves is weaved throughout the design, with custom cabinetry, mirrors and fixtures – the frameless curved shower screen adds to the sense of openness. 

The result is a luminous, dramatic space, with a contemporary yet timeless feel.
