For this home, Japanese vibes are evoked through natural timbers, exposed structural elements, sunken living areas, roof cutouts, and charred timber finishes – views of the golf course were another driver

House designer – Design Builders Bay of Plenty

From the home builder:

Project overview

Our homeowners envisioned a modern-style home with a distinct Japanese vibe.

To achieve this, we emphasised the use of natural timbers, exposed structural elements, sunken living areas, roof cutouts, and Japanese charred timber finishes.

A central focus of the design is to maximise views of the golf course – influencing the prioritisation of room layouts toward this picturesque setting.

Specific requirements

  • Modern style with Japanese influence – the owner seeks a fusion of modern architectural elements with a pronounced Japanese aesthetic, achieved through carefully curated design features and materials.
  • Natural timbers and exposed structure – the design will prominently feature natural timbers and exposed structural elements to evoke a sense of organic simplicity and authenticity.
  • Sunken living areas – incorporating sunken living spaces enhances the connection between interior and exterior, creating a tranquil environment that resonates with Japanese design sensibilities.
  • Roof cutouts and Japanese charred timber – these distinctive elements serve to not only add visual interest but also pay homage to the Japanese architectural tradition, providing a unique touch to the overall design.
  • Maximised golf course outlook – the layout prioritises rooms with optimal views of the golf course, ensuring a seamless integration of the natural landscape into the living experience.

Challenges and solutions

Capturing Japanese aesthetics – balancing the modern architectural style with authentic Japanese design elements posed a creative challenge.

To meet this, we conducted research on traditional Japanese architecture, ensuring a respectful incorporation of key elements while maintaining the integrity of the modern design.
