For this bathroom, the owners asked architect Clinton Cole, of CplusC, for a central bathroom, robust and flexible enough to serve all bedrooms of the middle floor of the home as well as an expansive living and entertaining space on the top floor.

The versatile bathroom had to meet the demanding needs of the children in the family and guests while also providing a sense of serenity and sanctuary for the parents.

One thing that was needed was a mix of parental privacy when required matched with easy accessibility in regard to children’s bath times.

All these things were achieved in a mainly white, flowing bathroom design that despite its full functionality has a dramatic, pared-back, futuristic presence.

“To achieve both privacy and connection, we installed two full-height bays of translucent Aneeta Flomotion sashless windows in the wall between the central corridor and the bathroom.

These contemporary elements allow the parents to open up the bathroom during family bathtime or for morning rituals such as making sure the children have brushed their teeth. However, the sashes can also be closed off for private moments.”

The design addresses another requirement of a busy family bathroom, too – that it has to be relatively easy to keep clean.

“We chose a highly curvaceous, continuous Corian vanity with twin thermoformed sinks blended into the Corian benchtop which flows seamlessly into the splashback and walls,” says Cole. “The surface in turn wraps down to the Corian flooring, requiring no tiling, grout or silicone joins.

"The continuous, fluid Corian forms ensure no mould can grow. In fact, this material provides hygienic, highly durable, easy to clean and low maintenance worksurfaces, ideal for this families’ busy lifestyle."

The lighting also provides for both functional and relaxed settings.

Automated pendant lighting over the bath combined with recessed LED strip lighting over the vanity and behind the wall niche ensures even light distribution for daily preparations, while the lighting is also pre-programmed for a relaxing ambience during down times.

Similarly, the dual showerheads, flush with the ceiling, accommodate the family’s rushed morning routines, or can be set for more relaxed, spa-like showering.

“The bathroom’s space age palette of white finishes and joinery is continued in the details of the heated towel rail, sink mixers, hanging bath spout, bathtub and shower roses,” says Cole. “Seen together, these elements, contribute towards a minimalist, contemporary aesthetic and provide a welcome contrast to the rich dark timbers of the adjoining hallway.”

No unsightly or germ-trapping joint was left exposed in the pristine fit-out. Expansion joints between the wall and the floor were avoided by using a linear strip drain as the control joint. This was a solution developed by CplusC in collaboration with the supply/installer.
