The new kitchen is suitable to be used by one or many at the same time This clean-lined kitchen has a pared back almost furniture-like appeal – the island in particular. Designed by Gunnar Friese, Hewe Kitchens and InteriorsFrom the designer:Design StatementWhen we first met the homeowners, they informed us of their brief:“This kitchen will be used by professional chefs at family gatherings, as our sons are both running successful restaurants”, so finding a functional layout was highest priority. The existing kitchen was squeezed in under the windows with a small scullery and a framed in pantry, making the space feel rather small. Layer cake! The island has a dramatic presence. The new kitchen needed to feel not only more spacious but have a place to have breakfast in the sun and to enjoy the view. It also needed to have a separate area for food preparation and for cleaning dirty dishes.Other requirements were a place to hide small on-bench appliances and an area for preparing drinks and coffees. Plus, clean lines and balance with a bit of wow factor were words that came up regularly.During the design process we came up with 9 different layout options, exploring concealed sculleries, bars and breakfast nooks. Despite the generous walking spaces, the kitchen has tight, efficient work triangles. The favourite design was to have a modern, open kitchen with designated spaces that all connected effortlessly. Visual balance with clean, unobstructed lines were how we approached this. The island needed to be unique with the wow factor and at the same time look more like a piece of furniture than a kitchen from the dining room and lounge. The owners have told us that for the Christmas dinner there were eight people working in the kitchen, without getting in each other’s way – which was fantastic. They also love how easy it is to use when there’s just the two of them and how perfectly it functions. The owners have also had plenty of compliments on the whole kitchen design, but especially about how unique the island is.Overall, the owners love it and have been impressed with how well it met their design brief.
