Embracing art, embracing nature

This airy, arresting home is all about the celebration of art and sculpture while the natural world also makes some surprising architectural entrances

Designed by Abramson Architects

From the architect:

Located on a quiet cul-de-sac, this three-storey residence reflects the owner's deep connection to art and nature.

The owner’s extensive collection is strategically located inside the home and throughout multiple landscaped areas.

From inside, architectural gardens and pockets of lush greenery suggest that the home is woven into the graded topography.

These outdoor intrusions soften the transitions from the common areas into the intimate spaces on the South and the utilitarian zone to the West.

At the edge of the living room, a melaleuca tree in an open-top glass case extends upwards through a void in the roof.

Enclosed within an exterior courtyard adjacent to the entry stair landing is an abstract sculpture by Guy Dill.

The sculpture garden narrows to form a .91m-wide landscaped alcove that traverses the living spaces before intersecting with the spacious backyard.

The landscaped garden incorporates a material palette that is of the earth: board formed concrete, blackened steel and decomposed granite.

The entertaining area’s playful elements include a fire-pit with a built-in concrete bench, a vegetable garden in raised steel garden beds, and a barbecue area with a countertop for outdoor dining, and a water fountain inspired by Mexican architect Luis Barragan.
