From the house designer:

Our homeowners had simple requirements for their home.

They had a young family and required a home that responded to the needs of their family in the short term but was robust enough to handle the family’s everyday activities in the home as they grew older.

In response to this brief, we took a more pragmatic approach to the design of the home, giving careful thought to materiality and zoning accommodation for both levels of the home.

The sculptural entry to the luxurious home.

We designed all the private zones on the upper level – three bedrooms and the master bedroom – so the parents and kids were together. Plus we also created a parents’ retreat and children’s’ spill-out space on this level, allowing options for both the parents and kids to use away from the main living zones downstairs.

On the ground level, we accommodated a three-car garage with direct access into the home and through to the laundry and kitchen scullery to allow for kids to “dump & run” and also for ease of unloading groceries from the car into the kitchen.

A home office located near the front door eliminates the need for visitors to enter past the entry foyer to access the office and a guest bedroom and ensuite with an external door access allowed for visitors to enter and exit independantly.

Another feature of the home includes a rumpus room for the kids on the ground floor adjacent the family room, allowing everyone to be together on the same floor but without the mess created being seen in the adult spaces.

Having the benefit of working with a large site allowed us to create an outdoor living space which complemented the home and allowed for open lawn space for the children and a large pool for fun and recreation – all the while ensuring the adults have clear surveillance of these areas while still being indoors.

The external aesthetic took cues from the traditional with the pitch roof but with a degree of modern customisation – both the gutters and roofing material were custom.

Large expanses of tinted glazing provide privacy from the busy street from inside – the large windows also balance the rendered masonry and polished plaster cladding.

The textural element of the random stone cladding gives the home its modern-classic touch.
