For this design in a mountain climate, passive ventilation through interior courtyards away from prevailing west-winds allows fresh air movement in warm months.

This living room opens up like a doll's house to the pool and patio through a series of stacker doors that retract into the wall, seamlessly connecting the interior to the sun and breeze.

Sliders open this interior to an outdoor room on the sheltered side of the home – owners and guests relaxing in the al fresco space can look back through the interior to enjoy the water views on the other side of the lakeside home.

Not one wall, but two – stacking sliding doors extend this kitchen/dining area on two fronts, effectively turning the space into an outdoor room.

The outdoor living zone, pool included, is enclosed by the home, which wraps around it in a U shape. Note the seamless, column-free corners where the sliding doors meet, optimising the sense of open connection.

This living area opens through large glass sliding doors onto a large covered veranda / BBQ terrace that faces the street. Here the owners can relax and greet neighbours as they walk to the beach.

Together with the external cedar sliding panels and sliding doors behind, automatically operated external louvres also bring precision control over the sun’s rays in this coastal home – as well as bringing the seaside feel indoors.

For this dramatic city renovation, full height bi-fold doors create a seamless connection between inside and out, extending the home’s footprint and connecting the interiors to the external environment – an important aspect of living in a dense urban environment.
