TIDA International Kitchen of the Year
Concepts by Gavin Hepper – Wollongong, NSW
The conscious decision to use fewer materials, and how those materials are detailed, sets off the layered design of the kitchen in this contemporary family home.
Natural textures and colouring in the stone and timber create a calming and connected atmosphere, contrasting with the linear, raw concrete architecture.
The kitchen provides a flexible entertaining space with multiple seating zones and storage, progressing through to a contemporary take on the butler’s pantry.
Judges' comments:
This kitchen has a subtle layered design, with a creative mix of wood and metal throughout.
There are some great details including the framing on the doors and drawers and the fluted detail on the island base.
The strong architectural nature of the island gives it a modern feel, yet with classical design references.

Runner-up:
TIDA International Kitchen of the Year
Morgan Cronin, Cronin Kitchens – Auckland
Part of an extensive renovation of a large family home, the design of this kitchen started with a proposed curved shape for the island, drawn up by one of the owners – an architect.
Given the complexity of the design, Corian was selected for the island’s construction and to allow the curves to be a stand-out feature.
Light oak in the island seating area and scullery shelving, and oak-look tiles on the splashback bring warmth and texture to what could otherwise have been a stark environment.
Judges' comments:
Modern and streamlined, this is a great layout for a large open plan.
The island design is both innovative and sculptural, and the contrast of the light oak with the white Corian looks fantastic.

Richard Archer, Archer Design – Sydney
This unusually shaped kitchen is part of a major renovation recently completed for a substantial Sydney harbour-side home.
The kitchen was not only required to wrap snugly between the existing lift shaft and the window wall, the homeowner also wanted it to connect seamlessly with the open plan living area and contain a full bar.

Reisa Pollard, Beyond Beige – North Vancouver
The design concept for this kitchen in a new home was to be a modern twist on classic luxury and to explore the idea of integrating historic glamour with new design trends.
From the hidden doorways in the perimeter millwork, to the eye-catching, custom designed, gold hood fan, this kitchen has become the home’s distinctive focal point.

Darren James Interiors – Brisbane
This dark-stained American Oak kitchen reflects quality from its appealing surfaces to high-end appliances.
As practical as it is handsome, it's more than up to the task of producing everyday fare and lavish formal dinners alike .

Milvia Hannah, German Kitchens – Christchurch
Marble – a long revered noble stone – features on every facet of this kitchen island, fronting a design with an organic, natural emphasis.

Humphrey Homes – Perth
Located at the rear of the home, this kitchen is designed in stark contrast to the front of the home, which echoes the original 1950s design.
It creates an entertainment hub, connecting visually, physically and through the use of materials to the outdoors, for a year-round alfresco lifestyle.

Jennifer Gilmer Kitchen and Bath – Chevy Chase
As part of an entire condo transformation, this kitchen continues the new design aesthetic with a clean, modern take, inspired by Asian design principals.
The space has been carefully reconfigured, and appliances moved to create better functionality.
The back wall presents as a feature wall from the living space, but also needed to house appliances and storage. In order to create an eye-catching detail, the cabinetry doors were laid out in a grid pattern and slightly proud of the surround paneling.

Openness and relaxed connections are successfully implemented in this pristine white and beech wood kitchen, served by a fully equipped pantry alongside

Pippa Paton Design – Oxfordshire
Extending the footprint of this Grade II listed house and creating the ultimate picture-window with floor-to-ceiling glass resulted in uninterrupted views from this impressive kitchen space.
An L-shaped area has ‘cafe-style’ bench seating and table, while two islands with green/grey shaker-style cabinetry and copper hardware incorporate a butcher’s chopping block, vintage baker’s table and breakfast bar.
Floor-to-ceiling units in sawn-edge oak accommodate cupboards, appliances and a secret pantry door.

This light-filled kitchen provides a social hub for a young family – it also draws together elements of the home's architecture for a wider harmony.
