Limited colour combined with a palette of carefully chosen materials is a successful way to create a visually striking kitchen. Incorporate the latest in technology and you'll have a kitchen that is flexible in its functionality, too.

It was this combination that formed the design of Sally Ridge's new kitchen.

"As well as being passionate about cooking, I needed a large, functional space that would fit the demands of my active family. On top of all that, it also needed to look good and be easy to clean," she says.

To help meet these requirements, the kitchen has an expansive island as its centrepiece. Matt black cabinetry, backpainted glass and marble countertops blend to provide a two-tone effect.

"I entertain frequently sometimes holding dinner parties of up to 16 people so appliances that would look great and perform well were an essential part of the design," says Ridge.

These requirements led to the choice of Fisher & Paykel Titan ovens and two DishDrawers, both finished in the company's new Iridium stainless steel.

"The two ovens are self-cleaning, which cuts down on chores, while the DishDrawers complement the streamlined look of the island," says Ridge.

Iridium offers the benefits of stainless steel with a matt finish that resists marks, says Fisher & Paykel's general manager NZ sales and marketing Craig Douglas. It is available on a selection of top-of-the-range Quantum appliances, including Inox refrigerators, DishDrawers, ovens, cooktops and rangehoods.

Douglas predicts Iridium stainless steel will inspire a new look in kitchen design.

"Iridium is a great new alternative to brushed stainless steel. It looks so good and has the added advantage of being very easy to look after. In this case, it is also a great match for the recessed aluminium handles, the aluminium toe-kicks and the aluminium edge on the benchtops," he says.
