Keeping the international airport's arrivals and departures on track was central to all the services working on the pier separation project. From apron lights outside the terminal to the expresso machines in the hospitality venues, a constant and reliable electricity flow was needed throughout.

Dickson Gray Electrical was the main electrical contractor for the AIAL pier segregation project. The company was responsible for the supply and installation of lighting and power, from external lighting to individual shop fit-outs, says contracts manager Grant Megson.

"Approximately 30km of cable was installed, together with 40 switchboards, 10km of cable tray and 2500 light fittings," says Megson. "We had 18 electricians working on the project, together with an engineer and project manager.

"Work ranged from the upscale, with cranes lifting light towers onto the roof of the terminal building, down to outfitting the new shops and catering venues for the upper floor all with the airport in full operation around us."

Shopping and catering venues addressed by the company included the airport cafe, The Blue Bar, Burger King and the Duty Free Galleria.

From 1am until 5am, Dickson Gray Electrical had a narrow time frame where any power outages or transfers of electricity loads could occur. Most of the apron lighting was installed during this time frame.

Operating in the secure, or air side, area of the airport, all staff had to be security cleared into and out of the site each day.

"The project was finished on time and to budget over an 18-month period," Megson says.
