Every aspect of the Auckland Airport upgrade considered the passengers' comfort. As with increased security and extended facilities within the pier, so, too, was there extended coverage from the elements outside the building.

Structurflex, in conjunction with the project architects, designed a Tension Membrane structure for passengers disembarking from buses arriving at the terminal. The structure, installed by Structurflex, had to be highly functional in terms of shelter from the elements and also contribute a contemporary air to the building.

Business development manager Mark Sixton explains how the design came into being:

"Manufactured in Tedlar-coated polyester reinforced PVC, the material was chosen partly for its continuity of colours and fabrics already in use at the airport," says Sixton. "The lightweight, gull wing structure also has an empathy with the airport's day-to-day business of flight.

"The result is a welcoming ambience for travellers, as well as shelter from the sun and rain."

Restricted budgets ensured a driven design process, with Structurflex providing continuous costing analysis. Speedy installation of the membrane structure was also important.

The design had to integrate with an existing membrane form and the upgraded terminal. Innovative linking elements allowed for an aesthetic and functional merger of the existing and the new.

Structurflex designs are purpose-built to their environment. The versatile structures are suitable for everything from sculptural business frontages to rooftop car parking areas.
