Some services at the airport had to consider not only how their own upgrade impacted on the evolving project, but also how other elements of the development affected their work.

Fire Specialists is the service agent for all the airport's extensive fire alarm systems. The company's role in the upgrade was extensive, increasing the existing system by 300 smoke detectors, manual call points and control relays, or 20 per cent overall.

The work required detailed and strategic planning almost on a daily basis. When isolated systems were taken down while work progressed, the company alerted Airport Rescue Fire so manual watch could be provided.

At the same time, Fire Specialists had to take into consideration other upgrade work. Where alterations were in progress, for example, sprinkler systems sometimes went off-line, with the company taking this into close safety consideration.
