The upgrade of Auckland's airport not only added extra services, but, as in the case of the baggage handling facilities, also streamlined existing elements.

Increased security was a driving element behind the upgrade. From January 2006, all bags loaded onto international flights had to be security screened. This involved relocating all screening of baggage to "back-of-house" venues, in turn speeding up the entire baggage handling process.

Glidepath, an engineering company specialising in airport baggage handling systems, baggage security systems, cargo handling systems and parcel sortation systems, undertook the project building on the strengths of the original system that the company had installed 10 years ago.

The work involved building a new, duplicate facility, which then took the initial strain of baggage movement while the original system was also upgraded. Integrating the independent software systems for the two side-by-side systems was a complex aspect of the fit-out.
