At the heart of the pier upgrade lies its skeletal form in enduring, uncompromising steel. D&H Steel Construction supplied and built the pier's underlying structure.

"The main pier segregation involved 450 tonnes of steel and the baggage hall another 200 tonnes all fabricated at our West Auckland premises," says D&H managing director Mike Sullivan.

"Due to security issues, there was an urgency round these extensions from the initial go ahead until recent completion. As a result, lead-in times were often tight between receiving design documentation and the steel being required on site.

"The on-site challenges were numerous, and working round travellers had its own complexities, with safety being paramount.

"Organising deliveries and erection to coincide with gate closures meant work was often carried out at night, and working round expensive aircraft means there was no margin for error."

Involved with the airport upgrades for 15 years, D&H has a good understanding of the demands of the environment and, consequently, a good working relationship with Hawkins and AIAL personnel.
