Walnut cabinetry, bronze fitting and sandstone floors give this bathroom an exotic feel

Achieving the away-from-it-all feeling of an exotic bathroom doesn’t mean importing hand-made tiles from Marakesh. For this bathroom, by John Mills Architects, a beautiful curved ceiling and rich wood cabinetry were evocative catalysts to jetting the mind off to Morocco.

“Having created an award-winning home restoration/renovation for the owners a few years ago, we were called back to bring the bathroom and kitchen up to the same level,” says Mills. 

“For the bathroom, they wanted a faded Moroccan bathhouse feel – soft and relaxing, with lots of light, and a timeless feel."

“Being a classic Athfield Architects-designed home, we already had a great vaulted ceiling to work with. This was plastered and finished in a deep neutral colour, with concealed up-lighting accentuating its beautiful curving form.”

Mills had already used walnut timber for other joinery in the earlier, wider renovation so this was his go-to material for the bathroom’s vanity and the substantial privacy wall with inset storage that separates off the toilet area.

And the interior of an existing concrete-pipe skylight was painted with a Porter’s liquid bronze paint that has a patina that complements the rich walnut.

The bronze fittings have a timeless feel, while the floor and wall tiles evoke worn sandstone.
