Why simply be practical when you can engage the senses? This bold, nature-inspired bathroom features tropical wallpaper, verdant stone-look tiles, and timber cabinetry

Designed by Nicole Wood, Spin Design

From the designer:

After 22 years of living, raising a family, and building memories in their home, the homeowners felt it was time to give something back to the space that had served them so well.

Their goal was to futureproof the home with a bathroom that balanced everyday functionality with a sense of joy and visual impact – something that would meet their daily needs and make them smile every time they stepped inside.

Easy-going by nature, the owners were clear on one thing: "Limit the choices you give us."

They wanted the design process to feel simple and stress-free, not overwhelming.

In response, we took the time to understand how they lived, what they were instinctively drawn to, and what made them feel at ease.

This allowed us to curate a focussed, intuitive selection of fixtures, finishes, and colours that resonated with their personal style – without complicating the decision-making process.

The brief called for a bathroom that was practical and hardworking, yet uplifting and expressive in design.

We leaned into boldness with confidence: lush tropical wallpaper, dramatic stone-look tiles, and rich, deep greens that evoke energy and a connection to nature.

A key challenge was achieving visual wow without compromising functionality.

We addressed this through spatial planning and detailing – recessed shelving in the shower, warm timber cabinetry to add texture and storage, and brushed fixtures that offer contrast without overwhelming the room.

The black-framed shower enclosure, set against black tiles and positioned opposite the statement wallpaper, provides a strong graphic counterbalance that ties the palette together.

Lighting played a vital role in the transformation.

A halo-lit mirror softens the space while delivering clear task lighting; an LED strip beneath the vanity, on a motion sensor and timer, ensures effortless nighttime use – enhancing both the practicality and mood of the space.

What makes this bathroom truly special is the sense of ease and delight it now brings.

In one owner's own words: “We are thoroughly enjoying the space. It is sheer joy!”

Where there was once a tired, outdated room, there is now a space that feels timeless yet bold – tailored to the owners’ personalities and designed to work well for years to come.
