The brief was for a home to meet the needs of a growing family with spaces to entertain and to maximise the connection with the surrounding bush. The composition of the existing house was retained with the addition of three new pavilions extending out on three axis, adding volume and natural light while encompassing the landscape grounds and native bush on the property. These forms also link back to the core of the home – the kitchen and dining area. Exploration of circulation and connections between these axes was integral in positioning the utility and recreational spaces so they interact seamlessly. The existing levels were retained, with the single level entrance disguising the volume and share scale of the two-level home. The entry provides for a sense of grandeur upon entering the living area with its dramatic views over the lawn to the surrounding bush.DesignSituated on a large 1.36ha block of land, the style of the home was a play on a contemporary French Provincial Style with weatherboards, boxed out bay windows, and a series of gabled forms extending out to the North, North-East, and North West axes. The high ceilings add to the spacious feel in the open-plan living/dining/kitchen spaces. These forms, coupled with floor to ceiling glazing, capture the ranging views while also bringing light deep into the home. The spaces allow for all round family living together with a cozy formal living space. The latter’s schist surround fireplace connects with schist seen in the outdoor living area. The outdoor living areas on both levels overlook the swimming pool while the manicured lawn beyond provides a buffer to the native bush. The use of wide, flush level thresholds provides seamless internal and external living spaces for entertaining and daily functional use by expanding the floor area into a variety of flexible spaces. The bedroom wings have been separated along with the formal and casual living spaces. The lower level provides for a guest bedroom, kitchenette, and rumpus area which accommodates game tables, together with a second lounge also flowing out to an outdoor deck and the pool. The triple car garage allows for generous storage to house a ride on lawnmower, bikes, and leisure equipment.Designed to accommodate and adapt, the positioning of the living spaces has been considered, focused and orientated to capture the sunlight and views. The use of wide, flush level thresholds provides seamless internal and external living spaces for entertaining and daily functional use by expanding the floor area into a variety of flexible spaces.
