Old and new an exterior of the original Mt Eden Council Chambers House appears as a feature interior wall in this penthouse master bedroom. An introduced skylight washes the wall in natural light.

The Chambers and Station renovation involved the transformation of two grand 100-year-old buildings into luxury apartments with a new glass connecting foyer. The project, by Templeton, was designed by A Studio Architects with Development Advisory Services as development manager, with Cyrus Greenbank at the helm.

"This was a complex job in terms of paint selection alone and Resene went out of their way to help us," Greenbank says. "We went through myriad testpots to get just the right look and Resene really came on board in terms of advice as well."

On this adaptive reuse project, two historic buildings have been transformed as upmarket apartments. The detail-rich original interiors were retained and accentuated in the makeover.

In the Council Chambers penthouse living spaces, one of the most architecturally detailed areas, the paint choices included Resene Alabaster in Resene Lusta-Glo semi-gloss enamel for raised parts of the ceiling, on the upper dado rail and on cornices and the ceiling roses. The semi-gloss helps the detailing stand out.

Walls down to the dado line are Resene Albescent White in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen while the architraves are Resene Quarter Cougar, also in durable Resene Lusta-Glo semi-gloss enamel. These were joined by other Resene colours to complete the sensitive renovation.

In the Council Chambers building, the original walls were covered in plaster mouldings, so retrofitting with services, patching and then replicating the original mouldings were all part of the adaptive reuse project.
