When the owners have been dreaming of their clifftop apartment for three years, it’s likely that nothing will be left under-considered at the design stage – with the master suite an important case in point. This was the story for this master bedroom, ensuite and dressing room, created by designer Jennie Dunlop. The wider project comprised a luxurious three-level seaside apartment complex, so making the most of the views was naturally right at the top of the owners’ master suite wish list. They wanted the ensuite itself to have a resort-look aesthetic, with twin basins, a freestanding bath and a generous shower. For this bathroom by Dunlop Design, the double vanity countertop is in Calacatta Lincoln Marble, toning with the porcelain tile. Under-mounted sinks and wall-mounted mixers help keep the vanity minimalist and contemporary. A waterfall finish softens the end of the vanity that’s on show at entry. “However, we exercised restraint with the styling to ensure the bathroom exuded a subtle warmth,” says Dunlop. “To this end, we chose rich milk chocolate-toned tiles with soft grey/white veining to set the tone for a relaxed and luxurious vibe.“Layering a floating, light-hued vanity with a marble top, discreet basins and mirror wall cabinets over the backdrop of veined brown tile on the floors and walls created the soft look we wanted.”“We decided to pull the vanity back from the ensuite entry as the substantial recessed slider opened directly on to it,” says Dunlop. “To soften the view of the stepped back vanity from the entrance, the marble benchtop has a waterfall finish at the ‘on-show’, door end." Large sliders between this master bedroom and terrace allow for effortless indoor-outdoor living in the ground floor apartment, part of a three-level clifftop complex. Like the adjacent ensuite bathroom, the generous-sized bedroom also features refined yet subdued colours and materials that create visual allure without detracting from the ocean views. Undermount basins and wall mounted tapware add to the vanity’s sleek lines.A freestanding curvaceous tub is set on the opposite side to the entrance and as such is a focal point. The tub’s position also means the owners can bath and take in the garden views from the full-height shuttered window to the right of it.“To optimise both space and storage, a return wall was added at the entryway, perpendicular to the vanity wall. This allows the long mirror-fronted cabinet to continue beyond the length of the vanity.” Credit list Designer Jennie Dunlop, Dunlop Design Benchtop Calacatta Lincoln Marble, from SCE Stone Basin GEA Undermount, from Robertson Bathware Shower stall Glass, from Inspired Trading Toilet Elisse MK2 Tiles Calacatta Black European Ceramics Hot water system Electric Ventilation Mitsubishi Centra Fugal Carpet Belgotex Hilton, from Award Carpets Paint Resene Vanity cabinetry Smoked Oak, by Good Kitchens Bath Terrasa Freestanding, from Robertson Bathware Taps Zuchetti Pan Wall Mounted, from Robertson Bathware Shower fittings Grohe Shower Head with Pan Slide, Elementi Rain Head, and Pan Mixer, from Robertson Accessories DCS Scarpa Heated Rails, from Franklins Under-floor heating and tiling Casa Ceramica Lighting LED strips, from Good Kitchens; recessed lights, from Fersa Blinds Painted Shutters, by NZ Window Shades Wallcovering Seneca Textiles Awards Trends International Design Awards (TIDA) Bathrooms – Winner Story by: Charles Moxham Photography by: Jamie Cobel 01 Dec, 2019 Bathroom New Zealand TIDA Bathrooms Trendsideas Home kitchen bathroom commercial design Latest Post Mixing it up 22 Dec, 2024 Deep in the jungle 22 Dec, 2024 Everyday opulence 15 Dec, 2024 We know the Specialists Related Book More Books > Home Trends Vol. 35/5 We're spoilt for choice these days when it comes to selecting the key materials available for building a new home – conc...
