Taming the interior

This project draws together the owners' eclectic art in a warm, enveloping interior with its vintage and earthy inspired fixtures, finishes, kitchen and bathrooms

Interiors by Katie Scott, Sticks+Stones Design

From the interior designer:

This new build on a corner section in Point Chev overlooks the harbour.

The house has large windows and open spaces over three levels.

The main thing that the owners wanted was for the large contemporary home to reflect their personality and feel warm and homely while also embracing their collections of furniture and art.

This meant that the owners' multicultural heritage and collections of Mid century and Asian furnishings guided the overall look of the interior choices.

A large mix of objects and art needed to be connected by the home's colours and hard finishes.

What has been created is a look and feel that embraces these items and gives an overall gallery-like-but-lived-in theme to this very contemporary build.

Fabrics, carpet and flooring have all been chosen with an earthy, soft, warm feel to make the large, open spaces feel inviting and intimate.

An oversized Tapa cloth centre stage in the double height living area which connects to the kitchen with its copper and walnut accents, giving an earthy Mid century vibe.

The mixed aesthetics of vintage furnishings are complemented by a large L shape curved Boucle sofa.

The bathrooms have large travertine-look tiles mixed with small warm white handmade tiles, adding texture and a sanctuary/escape feel.

Rust colour velvet and Silvered cork wall linings in the master bedroom mimic the travertine and copper finishes in the ensuite bathroom, connected without doors.

In addition, linen curtains and loop wall carpet add earthy texture to all bedrooms and upper areas.

Overall, the home feels warm, inviting soft and filled with interesting furniture, objects and art.

Nothing feels out of place with everything complemented by the soft palette and its vintage and earthy inspired fixtures, finishes, kitchen and bathrooms.
