Tall, dark and handsome
Dark wall and ceiling tones, warm wood battens and vanity, and all flooded with natural light from skylights on high – this master ensuite exudes a sense of drama and luxury
Designed by Tim Dagg, Sheppard & Rout Architects
From the architect:
This ensuite is located on the first floor and serves the main bedroom suite. The brief was to bring natural elements used elsewhere in the house into this ensuite and create a luxury bathroom for the owners.
The upper floor is a wedge shape and the ensuite is located behind the main bedroom and dressing room.

From the white bedroom with high skillion ceiling, the owners access the ensuite through the dressing room. The light filled dressing room contains a large 2m x 2m skylight in the roof which brings natural light into this room. This then contrasts with the deliberately darker finishes in the ensuite beyond. These dark finishes create a relaxing and luxury sense of spaces for washing.
The plan of the ensuite creates separate areas for the WC, shower and basins, all connected by a floor of black tiles and dark painted walls and ceiling (Resene Artefact). Black taps and shower fittings continue this dark theme.
A feeling of warmth is provided by the Fijian kauri timber wall battens and removable duck boards to the shower floor. This is contrasted by the large format concrete coloured tiles to the shower.
Privacy is provided by the location of the windows, but natural lighting is provided by the skylight. Extensive use of lighting highlights the architecture in this room.
