Strong yet understated

Strong lines, angled windows and robust materials recommend this home which downplays its three-storey height and opens to the landscape at rear

Designed by Kelly Rush, Krush Architecture

From the architectural designer:

The brief was to design a modern high-end home that maximised the use of the small 469m² urban site, which overlooks a popular park to the north and has distant views of the Port Hills to the south.

The house is spread over three floors, with a four-car garage and entry on the ground floor and four bedrooms, three bathrooms, an office and open plan living over the first and second floors.

The slope of the site, with an over one metre fall, means that at the street frontage the full three storeys are seen, and at the rear only two and a half storeys are visible.

Although three storeys, the house has been designed for easy living and as such has been future proofed with a lift reaching all floors.

Design features

The house was designed to look solid and robust as well as being low maintenance, with claddings such as Cerano finished Rockcote Integra panel, black standing seam metal and feature contrasting exterior tiles.

The massive cantilever of the first floor over the garage and entry is the focal point as you arrive up the long driveway.

The cantilever breaks up the three-storey façade as well as providing protection to the front door.

As you walk through the front door you are met with a voluminous two-storey void that has been highlighted with a feature angular textured timber wall.

This provides contrast and warmth to the interior.

Past the entryway you are drawn to the solid staircase that is constructed with a mix of blackened steel, tiles, and full height vertical timber / steel slats.

The sloping nature of the site means the living area is approximately 1500mm above ground level.

This creates a raised platform for the indoor and outdoor living, looking directly through the treetops, feeling like you are immersed within the native bush beyond.

An angled roof with a custom twisted black metal soffit creates a subtle feature while also providing sun protection to the 6.4m wide living room sliding doors.

On the third floor, angled metal boxes frame the full height sliding windows, encapsulating the stunning views beyond.
