Strachan Group Architects wins 2021 TIDA New Zealand Architect-designed Kitchen of the Year

Designed as part of a long-term home for a growing family, this kitchen acts as the suburban home’s central hub.

With small children, the design needed to ensure safety around the cooking areas, while also providing a natural and easy place for the family to gather. 

The large island bench is ideal for informal meals or just as a place where all the family can be engaged with activity in the kitchen.

Locating the kitchen under the central gable of the house creates a sense of volume and space not normally associated with kitchens, while the birchwood ply used to accentuate the ceiling plane is continued in the kitchen cabinetry.

The judges noted how the design makes the most of natural light, not only from east and west but also from above, creating a unique shifting light quality that tracks the sun through the day and the seasons.
