Contrasting textures can enliven your home interior. For this home, the designer specified SimplySisal flooring from Artisan Floorwear, in the colour Dover

No matter what style of home you prefer, you can be sure the flooring will determine its overall look. Getting it right will help other aspects of the interior design and architecture pull together to create a harmonious scheme.

For the Mediterranean-style house shown here, designer Angela Hutton wanted a textured flooring that would enhance its slightly rustic look. SimplySisal flooring from Artisan Floorwear, a division of Advance Flooring, was an ideal choice.

"The house has elements of the French Provincial style, but is more relaxed, with large macrocarpa beams and a barn-like door," Hutton says. "A traditional carpet would have been too formal. With a family consisting of two boys, as well as cats and dogs, the flooring also need to be practical."

Hutton says SimplySisal fulfils all these requirements. As well as being hard wearing and dirt resistant, it imparts a warm, welcoming feel and enhances the casual ambience, she says.

"As an interior designer I place just as much importance on texture as colour. Textured elements can be overlooked, yet they can make a world of difference to a home's interior."

SimplySisal flooring can be laid as wall-to-wallcarpet, as shown on the stairs above, or can be custom manufactured as a rug. Edging fabrics include jute, cotton, leather and tapestry.
