Masonry homes may have been around for centuries, but there's plenty that's new in the way concrete is used in homes today.

Director Mark Wilson says that while the company designs many traditional Masonry Villas, it is constantly exploring new ways to use concrete to enhance a modern look.

For example, this contemporary house built by Nautica Homes features honed concrete block walls in the family living area, a honed concrete floor and stair treads, and a cantilevered hearth made from similar concrete.

"Honing or polishing the concrete exposes the aggregate, which adds a strong, textured look to the interior," says Wilson. "It also creates a semi-industrial look that works well with modern designs."

Wilson says Masonry Villas offer a number of additional benefits to homeowners. The solid construction provides a substantial look and creates deep reveals for doors and windows.

Thermal and acoustic insulation is another plus with even greater insulation provided by the use of insulated Firth Hotblocs in many homes.
