The right roofing can make all the difference to the look of your home. Gerard Roofs offers a number of alternatives

Street appeal is a vital consideration for most people building a new home. And, with the noticeable move towards narrower, deeper lots, the design and choice of building materials for your home has become even more significant.

In recognition of the need for an executive-style house that would have a substantial presence, Fyfe Homes chose a brick construction and Gerard Roofs' Senator Shingle roofing for the Howick show home featured on these pages.

Marc Denness, Fyfe Homes manager, says the bricks were bagged and painted white to enhance the solid construction. The Gerard Roofs Senator Shingles in Charcoal were also specified to reinforce the substantial look of the house.

"We didn't want the roofing to look too busy," says Denness. "The Senator Shingles have a flat look that works well with the brick."

Denness says the roofing was also specified for its ability to withstand the vagaries of the weather.

"Weather patterns are changing," he says. "We are finding winters are wetter and more windy. Gerard lightweight roofing is very tolerant of these conditions. The roofing is nailed through the rolled, leading edge of the tile, which makes it very secure. Its design also makes it very watertight."

The Wanaka homestead shown on these pages features Gerard Corona Shake roofing in Charcoal. Builder Mark Duffy says this textured roofing was chosen to complement the plastered exterior of the home and the use of Central Otago schist for columns and walls.

"Gerard Corona Shake also looks particularly good in an alpine setting such as this," he says. "The owners of the house had already admired the roofing on another home and could see how well it fitted into the surroundings."

Duffy says the roofing was also chosen for its light weight, which made it a cost-effective option.

"As the house is timber framed, it would have been a lot more expensive to alter the structure to accommodate a heavier roof," he says. "Gerard Corona Shake provides the best of all worlds."

Gerard Corona Shake and Senator roofing, like all Gerard Roofs products, have various trim options available and colour co-ordinate with most standard building products. The roofing comes with a 50-year pro rata weatherproof guarantee, which also covers coastal locations.
