This atmospheric master ensuite borrows from the bedroom's tones and is shielded from the latter by battened floor-to-ceiling sliders

Designed by Katie Scott, S+S Design

From the designer:

A complete renovation and redesign of the interior space of a 1912 villa in Kingsland included retaining character details while adding a modern touch.

The ensuite was located next to the walk-in wardrobe to allow for a feature wall with hidden doors for side by side entry from bedroom.

Owner requests:

  • ample lighting
  • a moody and intimate feel
  • classic touches with a new contemporary feel
  • a little bit of luxury
  • minimal painted walls.
  • feature wall /doors from bedroom to ensuite and to walk-in wardrobe.

With the space already featuring beautiful high ceilings I worked the design to emphasise this and distract from the modest floor area.

Lighting was a key factor in responding to the owner's requests for a moody aesthetic.

The existing window was fitted with reeded glass for privacy and also to help tie in with the repeating feature of reeded surfaces and glass throughout the villa.

Large format tiles in a smokey grey contrast with small handmade tiles used in the vanity &  toilet areas – adding a soft texture – and also featuring in the main bathroom.

Wing walls are added to create depth and make the space feel less box like, this also allows the mirror cabinet more depth for extra storage.

The reeded glass shower screen to ceiling creates some visible separation from the toilet and shower – allowing for simultaneous use by both owners.

The full wall between bedroom and ensuite was clad with battens and painted in a dark grey matched to the ensuite vanity.

This was custom built with floor to ceiling sliding doors in the same batten finish so when closed they blend into the wall and disappear.
