A sculptural island – finished with 100 coats of liquid metal copper and echoing the shape of a ship's hull – takes centre stage in this refined coastal kitchen

Designed by Sarah Nolen, Birdblack Design

From the designers:

Our homeowners approached us with a profound vision: to craft a home that not only exudes beauty but also seamlessly integrates functionality into every aspect of its design.

The resulting home stands as a testament to this vision, situated majestically on the stunning South Coast of Australia.

This beachfront abode sets new standards in architectural innovation, construction methods, and interior detailing – redefining luxury living along the shorelines.

Birdblack Design, entrusted with bringing this vision to life, ensured that every element of the interior design harmonised with the home's architecture.

The outcome is a space that exudes warmth, refinement, and above all, a sense of homeliness that transcends aesthetics.

One of the standout features of the residence is the kitchen Island, inspired by the graceful curvature of a boat's hull.

Despite its imposing size, the island manages to evade a monolithic presence, thanks to its three-dimensional, curved design that imparts a sense of airiness and lightness to this central hub of culinary creativity.

The fabrication of this island was nothing short of extraordinary; its sheer size necessitated the use of a HIAB machine for transportation from the fabrication site to within the home.

The choice of a liquid metal copper finish for both the island and the rangehood serves as a captivating visual focal point, infusing the space with a sense of warmth and character.

The application required 100 coats of the liquid copper and patina to be applied to the structure, formed in MDF.

A final clear polyurethane was then applied to prevent the copper forming its natural verdigris patina.

The deliberate gradation from darker to lighter hues in the shading of the copper creates a subtle ombre effect, adding depth and dimension to the overall design narrative.

Furthermore, the splashback, adorned with a microcement finish, conceals a discreet secret door that leads to the wet kitchen behind.

This choice of texture and toning was designed to seamlessly complement the French Vanilla marble specified throughout the home.

The wet kitchen is arranged as the primary preparation area, offering a dedicated space for culinary endeavours.

Complete with a cosy coffee nook, ample bench space for prepping, and a convenient cooktop to fulfil all the cooking needs of the household, this kitchen stands as a testament to the thoughtful consideration given to every aspect of the homeowners’ lifestyle and comfort.
