A new and funky guest bathroom belies its previous existence as a darker, cramped and poorly organised space – tiles from The Tile Depot were instrumental in the transformation

A new and funky guest bathroom belies its previous existence as a darker, cramped and poorly organised space.

Without changing the exterior size of the room, it was completely gutted and transformed into this spacious and attractive powder room.

The original space was around 20 years old and despite being in great condition, it had an impractical layout and a somewhat drab character.

A small corner acrylic shower was positioned just inside the doorway and users had to squeeze past this and a tiny floor mounted vanity to use a toilet at the rear of the room which, strangely, was surrounded by a relatively vast amount of open space.

By swapping the position of the toilet and shower, the reconfigured room was immediately opened up, enabling a larger tiled shower that runs the full breadth of the room to be installed.

With this increased space, a larger wall hung vanity was also able to be added and there is now ample room and easy flow throughout the space.

Despite the room’s small size, three different tiles from The Tile Depot have been used to lighten and brighten the room, adding to the sense of spaciousness and really giving the room its eye-catching contemporary character.

Three contrasting textured tiles created with three different materials were chosen to give a really tactile element to the space.

A large 600x600mm porcelain tile, Stardust Moon, adorns the floors and two walls.

This is a hard-wearing porcelain from The Tile Depot’s Lifemark™ Approved range.

It has great slip resistance and a metallic shimmer that captures the light.

Using the large format tile across the floor and extending it up to the ceiling for a stream-lined effect also results in minimal grout lines and expands the visual width and height of the room.

Fish Scale mosaics cut from honed Carrara marble create a stunning feature wall in the shower.

This is a nod to the home’s close proximity to the beach and the owners’ love of the ocean.

In addition, a 4D Linear White 400x800mm ceramic tile with a raised 3-dimensional linear texture was ordered on indent for this project.

By laying the tile horizontally, the raised linear effect draws the eye into the room, lengthening the space visually and adding a sense of depth.

The simple white tone further brightens and lightens the room and allows the texture to be the true feature element.

By tiling the entire room from floor to ceiling and continuing these tiles into the shower, the room has really been successfully opened up.

With only a glass screen and necessary tiled nib interrupting the flow, the room seems open and airy.

Clever and practical design decisions both in terms of layout and tile selection have resulted in a room that feels considerably larger than its previous form and with a stylish aesthetic to stand the test of time.
