With forest green cabinetry and crafted woodwork, this finely finished kitchen steals the show and connects with the home's woodland setting

Designed by Hayley Rodgers, Melanie Craig

From the designer:

Situated beside a dense green forest, surrounded by mountains sits this newly-built architectural home. Constructed using engineered precast concrete panels, the exterior features strong materials, such as concrete and steel.

The brief was to create a functional kitchen space to suit their family and entertaining orientated lifestyle. The kitchen was to have strong connections to its outdoor surrounds, whilst creating a homely feel and softening the interior use of concrete.

The kitchen backs onto a concealed staircase (access to bedrooms and upstairs living) with the negative space from beneath the stairs been used for a connected scullery. The connection of the scullery and storage was important to the rest of the kitchen, instead of having a dark separate pantry. Mess can be hidden with a roller door when needed.

Instead of taking centre stage for all to see every crumb or dirty dish, the kitchen is set to the side of the main living space. This location means it achieves a strong connection to the outdoor living, a space the owner uses often for entertaining.

The zoning of the kitchen was carefully considered. The cleaning zone is placed at the back, hidden from the main living space by the fridge but connected to the scullery via the continued Absolute Black granite benchtop.

The cooking zone is located in the island, complete with custom brass and iron paste steel rangehood. The rangehood was designed to make a statement, offering storage and display with additional task lighting.

The use of brass brings warmth the space and is repeated in the shelving, negative detailing and plumbing/hardware details.

The use of walnut timber veneer brings the desired warmth and richness to the design while showing beautiful craftsmanship through the use of panelling and tapered leg detailing in a table-like informal seating area. The seating area is positioned close to outdoor living and coffee nook.

The black granite benchtop is butted to the walnut island top to create a heat resistant surface for cooking and the differing surfaces separate the social and cooking zones.

The army-green lacquered joinery fronts dominant the space, creating a strong connection to the outdoors and colour palette for the rest of the interiors to flow.

Together, the design elements outlined above create a modern kitchen which suits the owners’ lifestyle of entertaining, complements the strong architecture of the home while at the same time creating a homely aesthetic.
