It was to be a place where family and friends could gather, meals would be prepared, children could do their homework and be an ideal place for reading the paper over Sunday breakfast. As such, the kitchen had to be spacious, filled with natural light, have robust finishes and yet offer texture and warmth. The response to this brief was to have a particularly long feature island bench with a CDK porcelain top that floats over a timber veneered storage element, allowing for a space at one end for seating for 4 bench stools. This is where friends and family can sit or stand and have a conversation while meals are being prepared. Over the centre of the kitchen a large skylight allows abundant natural light into the kitchen so that artificial lighting is not required during the day.The skylight contributes to the feeling of space and light in the kitchen. The back bench is where all the built-in functional elements of the kitchen are – the fridge, cooktop, sink, ovens. These are carefully laid out to be as functional as possible after studying the way that the homeowners like to prepare meals, to ensure travel distances are minimised. One of the specific challenges was in the detailing of a minimalist modern kitchen and the importance of its execution. A good example is the large skylight, which had to align with the built-in fridges on the left and the ovens on the right. This required meticulous planning – allowing for planning constraints with the upstairs rooms, structural steel beam locations, wall linings, and roof plumbing – knowing that the end result had to be perfect.
