Refined yet inviting

Heredity meets personality in this kitchen makeover which inject character, warmth, and a cohesive design sense that connects with the wider home's ambiance – a handcrafted vibe pervades the space

Designed by Jessica Valintine Design

From the designer:

Project overview

This kitchen transformation was driven by the need to inject character, warmth, and a cohesive design that aligned with the owner’s interior aesthetic.

The original space, while functional, lacked personality and had not reflected the homeowner’s refined yet inviting style.

The redesign balances contemporary and classic elements, creating a timeless yet practical kitchen that seamlessly integrates with the home’s overall ambiance.

Design concept

Inspiration for the kitchen was anchored in an American Modern Heritage aesthetic, a fusion of classic and contemporary influences.

The design introduces a subtle industrial feel, incorporating steel-framed doors with delicate, thin profiles.

These elements add depth and interest without feeling overly traditional – allowing for an elegant yet approachable atmosphere.

A mix of soft white framed cabinetry and warm veneer accents brings texture, contrast, and a bespoke, artisan quality to the space.

The neutral colour palette, composed of whites, off-whites, and muted tones, is layered with warm light and medium wood hues, reinforcing a sense of depth and warmth.

Functionality & flow

The existing flooring and kitchen footprint were largely retained due to their practicality and well-planned layout.

Enhancements were made to improve functionality without compromising the established workflow:

  • Seating was integrated at the end of the island, creating a comfortable, social hub without disrupting the workspace.
  • Appliance updates were minimal, maintaining the majority of existing fixtures while incorporating a new integrated dishwasher and an additional dishdrawer in the scullery for improved efficiency.
  • The scullery sink was relocated to the opposite end of the room, ensuring it remained out of sight – given that the double cavity slider doors were typically left open, this change enhanced the visual appeal and kept the main kitchen space clutter-free.
  • Internal cabinetry fit-out was significantly improved, optimising storage solutions and functionality despite maintaining the original footprint.

Materiality & detail

A focus on natural materials ensures longevity and authenticity.

The combination of framed cabinetry, steel accents, and warm wood tones enhances the handcrafted quality of the space.

Traditional and curated decor elements were seamlessly incorporated behind the glass doors, adding layers of character and personality while maintaining a fresh and contemporary feel.

This kitchen brings together modern precision and classic charm, showing how thoughtful design can enhance both style and everyday functionality.
