Celebrity apartment gets luxurious family renovation
Babe Ruth once walked the floors of this apartment but it's unlikely he would recognise it now. A transformative interior design interwoven with exotic wall treatments and artworks has given this riverside eyrie a rich, opulent air

This light-drenched apartment overlooking the Hudson River was designed to be a warm and durable modern aerie for a family of five. The design was focused on the activities of the family: cooking, entertaining, homework, and a love of sports.
We completely levelled the existing interior, which had been home to Babe Ruth and Isaac Perlman.
The family wanted a design concept that brought light and views into the heart of the home and joined all activities into a central connecting space.
In response, we created a panelled gallery space onto which all public rooms face and which is large enough to practise hockey shots (discouraged but…) and to dine in on holidays.
White oak is the wood seen throughout. This creates a light, soft, non-intrusive background for everything else. At the end of the wood panelled gallery is the simple but large kitchen and the adjacent breakfast area.
The wall at the breakfast niche is an art piece in gold leaf by Eva Buchmuller who did all the custom wall treatments in the apartment. The table top is blue acrylic.
The family room is combined with the dining area which features two Brooklyn-made custom oak dining tables and an 5.4m long banquette. This allows for the large dinner parties that the family loves to give.
Mohair features on the seat of the banquette and the back is linen with a custom applique and embroidery designed and executed by Combray. A complementary embroidery was created for the matching linen drapes.
A bright yellow silk Fort Street carpet features in the living room, along with a custom curved sofa from Donzella and another designed by us based on the classic Coco Chanel sofa. A Wendell Castle coffee table is paired with one from Holly Hunt. Artwork is from Klari Reis, Ed Cohen and Christopher Kurtz.
The master bedroom features another silk Fort Street carpet, a mirror-polish lacquer wall and a chandelier by Ted Abramzcyk.
The master bath is a modern-abstracted take on a classic marble panelled bath with grey marble and white marble accents and polished nickel doors and accessories. And a gorgeous view.
A wall with a rune-like alphabet that spells out his name features in the middle-child’s room. This was created by the artist Eva Buchmuller.
The youngest child’s bedroom features a quilted velvet headboard and vintage lighting. Both of these bedrooms have large desks of acrylic that captures the light and appear to glow from within over the custom walnut cabinetry.
The guest bath has a custom made marble toilet.
