Flowing storage into tricky spaces and adding skylights made sense in this serene master suite Designed by Debra Brockman Interior Architecture + DesignFrom the designer:This family home in a coastal town of WA, had a few areas that the owners wanted to update. An aspect of this was that they wanted to convert the spare bedroom upstairs into a master suite.By opening up the roof space surrounding the existing bedroom, our biggest challenge was getting a floor plan that would also comply with the various NCC (National Construction Code) restrictions regarding the existing pitched roof line and room heights in habitable spaces. The various ceiling heights in the lower storey also complicated the design, as the owners wanted to leave those unchanged. As a result of working through these restrictions, we were able to create a large amount of much needed storage space with custom cabinetry built within the unusable sides of the roof cavity along each side of the bedroom. This was designed to continue up the steps into the new spacious dressing room, creating a seamless link between these spaces. On the other side of the room, the matching cabinetry leads you into the ensuite area. Getting plenty of natural light into the bedroom was easily resolved by stripping back the flat ceiling, and installing 4 large Velux skylights, all with electronic opening, and blockout blinds over the bed, into the existing pitched roof. The addition of another skylight over the bathtub was mostly for the joy of a country night sky.The selections of finishes and fixtures were to work in with the owners' modern, coastal aesthetic, and their general love of all things white.
