A beautiful Queenslander home was ill-served by a modern but style-free kitchen – enter a new design in keeping with the home's classic appeal

Designed by Darren James, Darren James Interiors

From the designer:

Perched up in the suburb of Red Hill, this beautiful Queenslander was in dire need of a facelift.

After recently completing lower level renovations, the homeowners approached us to give them the kitchen and living space they have always dreamt of.

Originally separated into three pokey rooms, the kitchen and main living space not only lacked a sense of connection, but the  kitchen resembled that of a  1990s contemporary build which just didn’t suit the character of a Queenslander home.

Now, as you walk through the front door of this home, you are met with a long corridor and character-filled doorway leading straight into the grand kitchen and living area at the back of the home.

Designed with a modern Queenslander aesthetic, with custom profiled doors that give the standard Shaker profile a run for its money, and an attractive, softly curved acid etched Ash Marble, the kitchen is now a space that the owners love.

The kitchen was designed with function in mind.

We gave the owners multiple areas to eat and entertain including an adjacent dining room with a fun feature pendant from Fred International as well as typical island bench seating under the elegant Atomium pendant, by Lambert & Fils.

With the island bench facing the new living area, we also gave the homeowners an additional prep sink fit with an All-In-One ZipTap so they can prep, cook, and fill up on drinks without disconnecting from their family and visitors.

Integration and seamless flow were also key to the design of the space.

Fully integrated appliances – including a side-by-side Liebherr fridge and freezer, an extra-large Miele dishwasher, and the professional series induction cooktop and benchtop downdraft from Bora – were selected.

These not only contribute to a beautiful, uncluttered space but also allow the owners to clean the space without having to worry about raised edges or fussy stainless steel.

To complete the space, we supplied furnishings such as the Brooklyn dining chairs from Jardan and the amazing Amadi Brahea II rug, from Halcyon Lake.

In addition, we partnered with Domo Australia and TW Fine Art in Brisbane to provide furnishings such as the Togo Lounge and the stunning artwork by Jonni Cheatwood that the owners adored.
