As every parent knows, having time out isn't just a discipline imposed on children. It's also vital for parents to be able to relax and recharge their batteries in a quiet, peaceful environment.

Creating such a place of escape was the determining factor in the design of this bathroom by Claire MacLean of The Elegant Bathroom Design Company.

"Choosing neutral colours was a way to enhance this sense of retreat," she says. "It also works with the reflected view of the green fields outside the window."

MacLean says the design needed to accommodate unusual corner angles and a sloping ceiling. Positioning symmetrical vanity cabinetry against a wall opposite the door allowed natural light, as well as the view, to be reflected in the mirror. Further natural light was introduced with a new skylight.

The dark jarrah wood cabinets and vanity are suspended above the floor, enhancing a sense of space. Similarly, using the same cream tiles on the floor and walls makes the room appear light and spacious. Other features include a pebbled half wall that helps to enclose the bath.

The toilet is positioned so it can't be seen from the doorway.
