For many building projects, a topping off ceremony or roof shout is a traditional way to celebrate the installation of the new roof. And there's a good reason for this. The roof brings shelter and a sense of security, and is a substantial part of the construction. But it also has a decorative role to play, helping to determine the overall character of a house.

These pages showcase the Supreme Winner in this year's Gerard Roofs Design Awards. The Upper Hutt country house was designed by Dean Bussell Architects and built by Richard Vlaar Residential. It features a long overlapping roof that unifies the separate wings of the single-level house.

The designers say considerable care was taken over the roof's selection as it is such a key feature. Gerard Corona Shake satin tiles in Obsidian were specified to provide a strong contrast to the Otago schist and stained cedar cladding on the exterior. The owners say they appreciate the shingle effect, as it enhances the contemporary country look.

Gerard Roofs products are frequently specified for their light weight, which helps make the roofing quick and easy to install. The light weight also means there is no need for an expensive substructure to bear the weight of the roof.

The roofing comes with various trim options, and colour co-ordinates with most standard building products. It also has a 50-year pro rata weatherproof warranty.

Business development manager Grant Williams says entries are now being accepted for the next Gerard Roofs Design Awards.
